LGBTQ+ History Month

LGBTQ+ History Month is an annual month-long observance of queer history and was founded by Schools Out, who have been campaigning for LGBTQ+ inclusive education for almost 50 years. In the UK it is celebrated in February to coincide with the 2003 abolition of Section 28.

This year’s national theme is Mind, Body, and Spirit. Throughout the month different organisations, charities, educational institutions, and LGBTQ+ individuals will be hosting online events to mark LGBTQ+ History Month, so make sure you keep an eye out for what’s going on!

Open minds – LGBT-inclusive education and children’s rights

Open minds – LGBT-inclusive education and children’s rights

Last year’s protests in Birmingham against LGBT inclusive education were just the latest example of the tensions that can arise when people expect the public education system to work in line with their private religious beliefs. In a plural (multi/no-faith) society you cannot give preference to a particular viewpoint without potentially alienating others. In this session, Dr. Ruth Wareham, Humanist UK’s Education Campaigns Manager, explains the benefits of a secular (no faith) education system and argues that ultimately such a system is better for all children.

In the UK, it is celebrated in February to coincide with the celebration of the 2003 abolition of Section 28.
